Tooth Discoloration Treatment

‘While she smiles, it leaves an indelible impact on everyone’s mind, because her teeth spark like a diamond.  Yes, many of us get astounded by the beautiful smile, and no doubt the reason behind this mesmerizing smile is the sparkling white teeth.

But are we aware of the fact that due to improper care of dental health can cause tooth discoloration?

Symptoms

Ranging from yellow to permanent white spot on the teeth, symptoms of discoloration may vary.

Yellow color teeth: It is not so severe discoloration. It may cause due to excess fluorine in drinking water.

White Spot: It may cause due to high fever from infection during childhood.

Reasons

There may have several reasons for what tooth may loose their normal spark:

Improper Dental hygiene: Poor dental hygiene and improper care of dental health may cause to be main reason for tooth discoloration. Negligence in dental care includes;

  • No regular brushing habit
  • No routine flossing for removing plaque and other products like coffee, tobacco etc, which produces severe stain.

Faulty Food habits: Taking several drinks and food can produce stain on your teeth.
          For example:

        • Certain fruits ( e.g. apple) and vegetables ( e.g., potato)
        • Chewing tobacco
        • Drinking Coffee and tea
        • Consumption of hard and soft drinks

                                 
These foods and drinks like cola, red wine, tobacco, and coffee are called ‘Chromogenic Food’, which implies that regular or frequent consumption of these foods may cause stain on teeth.

Gene factor: Sometimes tooth discoloration may be the result of heredity.

Smoking: Excessive smoking can take the whiteness of the teeth away.

Diseases: Many diseases can be the root cause for discoloration of your teeth.
Effects on teeth:

  • Few diseases directly affect the hard surface, which is called enamel of the teeth.
  • Sometimes discoloration of teeth takes place due to the effect of disease on the dentin or the portion of teeth beneath the enamel part.

Name of Diseases:

Not only the disease, but also the treatment of the disease may cause tooth discoloration like:

  • Radiation of chemotherapy
  • Head and  neck curing radiation
  • During pregnancy, expecting mother may be the cause of bad spotting staining on the teeth in the infant due to affect in enamel development.
  • If the liver is not functioning properly
  • For high fever, during childhood caused by infection may cause poor calcification on the teeth, resulting in discoloration.

       
Medicines: Due to several medicines teeth may get affected:

For example:

  • Any antibiotic tetracycline or its derivative compounds, i.e. minoclycine and doxyclycline are strictly not recommended for the pregnant women and children below eight years, as it causes blue-gray staining, during the period of tooth formation.
  • Even in adults, minoclycine can lead to staining on teeth.
  • Excessive of fluoride consumption in children may cause white to brown spots on teeth.

More fluoride:

  • Environmental reason with the excess of fluorine in the water may cause staining on tooth.
  • More concentration of fluoride in the tooth paste, rinses, fluoride supplement may lead to gray or black coloration of the tooth.

Sudden Trauma: Discoloration of the teeth may take place for the trauma happened due to sudden accident or unexpected shock.

Age factor: Unlike various deterioration of other body organ, staining on the teeth may be the result of aging.

Material used in dentistry

Few teeth curing material in dentistry can cause ill-colored teeth:

  • Silver sulfide containing material during amalgam restoration may darken the color of teeth

Prevention

We all know that prevention is always better than cure.

To prevent staining of teeth, one has to maintain few day-to-day tips;

  • Brush your teeth properly
  • Brush teeth twice a day
  • Choose your tooth paste with proper fluoride balance
  • Try to wash your mouth after eating
  • Avoid chewing tobacco
  • Avoid consuming  tea, coffee like products frequently in a day
  • Avoid taking aerated drinks or red wine so often
  • Visit your dentist at least once in a month

Treatment: After taking all the preventions, if for some other reason whiteness of your teeth disappears, there are various treatments to cure your problem. But the intensity of the treatment depends on the reason for discoloration of the tooth. Those treatments are discussed as under -

Bonding: In this treatment, one durable plastic material or resin material with the color of your tooth is applied, attached or bonded with the tooth with the help of a special kind of a light

Tooth whitening: Various tooth whitening products are available in the market in the form of:

  • Tooth paste
  • Gel
  • Strips
  • Trays

Veneer: It is another treatment to help make your teeth whiter. In this process, a material thin like a wafer, tooth colored, known as porcelain veneer or porcelain laminate is designed to cover the front portion of your teeth.
