How to Keep the Cavities Away

A look at what cavities are and how we can prevent them from happening.

Your teeth may look nice and bright but you may be surprised at what a dentist can uncover.

Many times when we visit the dentist we find that cavities are forming. This can happen to people who practice good oral hygiene. Dentists have advanced equipment so they can spot problems that the naked eye can’t. However, this is the time to find them before advanced decay sets in. Cavities are gaps that start to form on teeth. They are the result of plaque that combines with bacteria and attacking the surface of the tooth. If cavities are spotted soon enough then lots can be done. Usually a filling takes care of the problems. If it is left then the damage can be far worse.

There are several ways to help keep cavities from forming. One of the most logical ways is to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. The act of brushing helps remove the plaque as well as reduces the bacteria count in your mouth. Flossing gets between the teeth where the tooth brush can’t. It removes the hidden food particles that can cause plaque and bacteria to build up.

Another effective measure is to use mouth rinses. Make sure they are anti- microbial or they will do more harm than good. These get into areas that tooth brushes and dental flosses cannot. Some also help to clean and disinfect the mouth. This will reduce the bacteria count in your mouth further and make life vary difficult for cavities.

There are several natural things that can be done to reduce your chances of cavities. Many of these fit into a healthy life style. One is exercise. Exercise reduces the amount of stress and anxiety in the body. When we are under stress, the bacteria count in our mouths as well as the rest of our bodies increases. By exercises and or doing stress reduction or relaxation exercises, we are reducing the amount of bacteria present and our chance of getting cavities.

Sailors on the high seas used to eat lemons.

This wasn’t because they tasted particularly good but because it helps them fight of scurvy and kept the gums from bleeding. In fact any food that is high in Vitamin C will have close to the same effect. Oranges, mangoes, Kiwi fruits and papayas are all great choices. They taste great and give your teeth a natural cleaning. They also have properties that help fight bacteria in your mouth. By eating these foods, you’ll keep the colds away as well as the cavities down.

Those that love a good tan and worship the sun will love this next tip. Vitamin D is another essential element in keeping cavities away. It is effective is restoring connective tissue particularly in the teeth and gums. One of the best sources of Vitamin D is right above us. Yes, the sun. No one is saying that lying out for hours is good for you. However, 15-20 minutes of sunlight on the skin is considered the most efficient way to get the vitamin D needed. If you’re not a fan of the sun then Vitamin D is available in milk and cheese.

Those that love fish and or nuts could be doing more to keep the cavities away than the realize. These are rich in essential oils that are great for the body and skin. However, what many do not know is that they are packed full of natural healing powers. They have antibiotic and anti bacterial properties. You can eat well ands keep the dentist away.

Those that want to be particularly close to nature may want to try tea tree oil, Echinacea or mint. All of these offer a natural pain killer, anti bacterial and antibiotic. The mint also freshens breath. All of these are available in most health food stores and work to keep the cavities away.

Cavities start out quite small and painless. However, that will change if the are not taken care of. No one really wants to visit the dentist unless they are particularly gorgeous. However, getting in that chair once or twice a year will do more to prevent tooth decay than you realize. Between visits it is best to maintain a good system of oral hygiene.

Brushing, flossing and rinsing will all keep the bacteria level low and greatly reduce the amount of cavities that form. Those that want a more natural approach have a wealth of opportunity in from of them. By doing things like exercise and relaxation, you will have noted health benefits as well as a reduction in mouth bacteria’s. By eating the right foods, your teeth will be able to fight plaque and bacteria naturally, keeping you away from the dentist’s drill.
