The Sheer Veneer

A look at dental veneers and the types of problems they can fix.

Any dentist will tell you that your teeth were meant to last a lifetime. However, who ever originally came up with this concept likely did not foresee people living past 60.

Today people are easily making 80-90 and even 100 years of age. Unfortunately for most, their teeth don’t quite make the journey with them. Our diet has also changes causing us to loose our teeth quicker. We eat far fewer raw vegetables and fruits than we used to. We have switched over to more refined foods with higher sugar content. This has led to more tooth decay and teeth giving in before they should.

There is some good news in all of these changes. Dental technology has advanced and improved. For those that have severally worn, damaged, decayed or discolored teeth, dental veneers present a viable alternative. Dental veneers are thin pieces of either porcelain or resin. They are designed to cover the front of the tooth to repair damage from wearing, breaking, or decay. These bond to the surface of the teeth offering a much better appearance and greater support for the teeth.

Dental veneers are used to treat a wide variety of dental problems. They come in handy when it comes to teeth that are severally stained. Smoking, certain foods and drinks can start to discolor teeth over time. Dental Veneers can restore teeth to their former color and leave the person with a bright clean smile.

Dental veneers can fix teeth that have been worn down. Those with soft teeth or uneven bites may find that their teeth are wearing down. Some teeth may be wearing faster than others. Dental veneers can help fill in these gaps. They make they teeth look much better and give some much needed support to worn and uneven teeth.

Dental veneers can help repair oddly shapen teeth, crooked teeth, and teeth that are out of alignment. Several factors can cause this problem. It could be inherited; a person could have had an accident or poor oral hygiene.

The dental Veneer can fill in these spaces and help to straighten uneven teeth that can lead to embarrassment.

Dental Veneers can also help fill in the gaps between teeth. Again, bad oral hygiene or accidents can lead to tooth loss. Filling in these gaps is important to the remaining teeth to prevent shifting. The dental veneers can fill in these gaps and restore that smile.

Having dental veneers fitted does take some time and planning. It is generally a three part process. The first step consists of mostly consultations. You and your dentist will discuss the process so he or she is aware of what you expect and that you are aware of the Dental veneer limitations. They will likely examine your teeth and even take x-rays. This will help to determine if dental veneers are the appropriate course of action for you.

The next stage is tooth preparation. This is where the dentist will shape the tooth and get it ready for the veneer to be put into place. A small portion of the tooth surface will be removed. This will help hold the veneer in place. Once this is done an impression will be taken of your tooth. This is then sent off to a lab for the veneer to be made.

The final stage is to have the dental veneer fitted. Your dentist may temporarily attach the veneer to make sure it matches your natural tooth color. If so then they will remove it and have it attached permanently. This involved your tooth being cleaned, polished and shaped. The dentist will likely rough the surface so the veneer will attach better. The final step is to have the dental veneer bonded to your tooth. This involves the use of a special light to seal it permanently.

Dental veneers provide several advantages. They allow the tooth to retain a natural appearance. Those veneers that are made of porcelain work very well with our gum tissue. Dental Veneers also allow for more of the original tooth to be saved than with other dental repairs.

There are some disadvantages to having dental veneers. The process isn’t reversible, you are stuck with them. Your teeth may be more sensitive to hot and cold. You can also still experience tooth decay when you have dental veneers.

Dentists love to say that teeth should last a lifetime. However, the lifespan was much shorter when this clever person decided to state this fact. Our lives are longer and eating habits much different. All of this has taken its toll on our teeth. More and more of us are out living our teeth. However, dental technology has provided some great alternatives. Dental veneers can restore stained, damaged and crooked teeth. They are not perfect but can make your mouth look lots better.
