If you are an adult that once wore braces, your children stand a much greater chance of needing the same treatment.
Braces and other treatments to correct teeth are not fun for the child or parent. The child has to bear these things for any amount of time ranging from 6 months to several years. The parent has to figure out where the money is going to come from to finance that million dollar smile.
Parents should start looking for signs of crooked teeth quite early on. In fact, The American Orthodontics society recommends screenings no later than 7 years of age. They can screen the teeth and jaw bone to find signs of future problems. Some can even be spotted before all of the baby teeth come out. Child orthodontics is best started young. Although the problems can be corrected at anytime, it is best to tackle them before the growth of the jaw bone starts to slow.
Many parents question if this kind of treatment is really needed. What is the worst thing that can happen if their child doesn’t get braces? Well, getting it sorted out early can save money and time. Children tend to heal and mend faster than adults do. Getting braces and or other orthodontic equipment done early leads to a much speedier recovery. Children typically wear braces 6 months to two years. Adults the time is much greater. This leads to a greater degree of comfort for the child and less of a hit on the pocketbook for the adult.
Sorting problems out while the children are young can also spare them from more evasive treatment later on in life. Chances are, the child will only have to endure some soreness and humiliation form braces.
If left until adulthood, the problems will worsen. Orthodontic equipment will be needed for longer and oral surgeries may be needed to correct the problems entirely.
Another reason to consider child orthodontics is to prevent the problems that can be brought about from having crooked teeth. Crooked teeth are much harder to clean than those that are aligned. Toothbrushes and floss have a hard time getting to all of the hard to reach areas. This leads to the build up of plaque and bacteria. From here, problems of staining, bad breath, cavities and gum disease can be the final result. By getting these problems sorted out early, the child can be spared a lifetime of pain, stains and further dental problems.
Crooked teeth make it much harder to eat and chew food properly. When teeth are crooked you may start to notice that some start to wear down much faster than others. This can make already existing problems much worse. Crooked teeth can also lead to jaw stress, aches and headaches. By attacking these problems early on your child can be spared all of these problems that will worsen with age.
When you decide to work with child orthodontics then you can expect several things. What will likely happen is your dentist will make a recommendation to you if the notice your child’s teeth are crooked. You will then be referred to an orthodontist for X-rays and screenings. A plaster mold will be taken of the teeth and other treatments. Finally, the braces will be put on your child for whatever length of time the orthodontists seems best.
Having braces is generally not painful. Having them put on only results in some minor discomfort. There may be some soreness for the first few days but the will adjust in time. The only other painful times are when the braces are tightened. This has to be done periodically to keep the teeth moving in the right direction. Again, there will be some soreness for a few days after however they will adjust in time. Your child may also experience some small sores on the insides of their mouths. This is quite common in the early stages of braces. It is the result of the metal rubbing against the inside of the mouth. This again will dissipate with time. However, if it gets too bad the orthodontist can offer wax to smooth the friction. Most of the pain can be taken care of with over the counter remedies.
If you notice that your child’s teeth are not exactly straight, then depending on their age, a visit to the orthodontist may be in order. Attacking these problems early can save your child a lot of pain and embarrassment. Child orthodontics may seem extreme in someone so young. However, leaving the problems until adulthood could subject them to far worse. Get your child screened and tackle the problems at the first sign of trouble. You’ll be saving yourself money and your child lots of hassle.
