Care Your Child's Teeth

Some advice on how to pack a healthy lunch to protect your child’s teeth.

We all want to think of ourselves as good parents. Part of being a good parent is caring for your child’s teeth. Today our diets consist of far more foods that can be harmful to our oral health that compared with decades

past. Quick snacks and refined foods are piling on the pounds as well as rotting our teeth away. Packed school lunches are some of the worst offenders. Convenience foods are packed full of refined sugars that are terrible for a growing child’s teeth. In this article, we will offer tips on how to pack a healthy lunch and at the same time, care for your child’s teeth.

It is vitally important that you start your child on good eating habits. Getting them into good habits while they are young will

increase the chances highly that they will stick. Getting them into good brushing and flossing habits at this time of their life will prove beneficial in later years. As they get older they will be much more likely to continue the good habits you have started. This is essential in caring for your child’steeth.

One of the first steps in packing a healthy lunch is knowing which foods to avoid. Some foods that may seem like healthy choices are surprisingly high in sugar. Try to limit foods like raisins, granola bars, candies, cookies and other sticky sweets. Although some these foods retain nutritional value, they are packed full of sugar. This sugar will sit with them until they get home from school, causing the most damage.

Try to pack your child’s lunches full of fruits, vegetables and cheeses. Fruits and vegetables that have a high water content are the most recommended these help to clean the mouth and increase the flow of saliva. Fruits that are high in vitamin C also fight bacteria and plaque. Cheeses help give the body a good source of vitamin D. this helps to repair the connective tissue and is highly valuable in the fight against gum disease.

To make the food a bit fun, try cutting the cheese with cookie cutters. Young children will love this and encourage them to eat it. Other good foods to pack are raw, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower and celeries. If you are concerned about your children eating these foods then pack some ranch or other type of salad dressing. These again help to clean the teeth and keep bacteria levels low. These are great helpers in caring for your child’s teeth.

Try sending a small toothbrush and tooth paste with your child’s lunchbox. Encouraging them to brush at school after they eat is an excellent habit to get into. Most schools have areas where your child can brush their teeth. You could also ask their teacher if they are willing to make sure your child is doing this.

Everyone likes a treat every once in a while but try to limit these. Possibly have then on a Friday or the last day before a holiday. Use them a reward for something like a good mark or good behavior. It is important however to keep them to the minimum. Keeping sugar levels low is an important step in caring for your child’s teeth.

If the school allows this, pack some sugarless or dental gum with your child’s lunch. Gum chewing, as long as it is sugarless can actually help to cleans the teeth. It increases the saliva flow which helps to replace essential minerals that are lost. If minerals are replaced in the teeth faster than they are lost then tooth decay will not occur. Make sure that you follow the school’s policy as far as gum chewing is concerned. However, most will allow it at breaks and lunch times.

When it comes to drinks, again try to avoid the obvious. Soft drinks and sodas are packed full of sugar and are nutritional nightmares. Fruit juices however can be just as bad. Make sure you read all labels on drink boxes and juices. You may be surprised at how much sugar is in these. Stick to natural juices from concentrates. If the school sells juices make sure you know which types.

Good habits are best made when the children are young. This will increase the chances greatly that they will continue this regime into later years. It takes much more than brushing and flossing to care for your child’s teeth. Good nutrition is also essential. Beware of quick snacks and convenience foods. These are usually packed full of sugar and are not good choices for overall nutrition. Be very wary of drink boxes even if they are fruit juices. These usually have added sugar. Fresh fruit juices and concentrated are the very best option. By following the tips and getting your children started early. You be caring for you child’s teeth in every possible way
